Theatrical adaptation in a post-colonial context. On The Taming of the Shrew.

The present paper challenges the status of adaptation from both an intellectual and poetic standpoint. The adaptation of Shakespeare's play, The Taming of the Shrew, in a post-colonial setting is a specific example which denotes the nexus of the critical analysis. We will try to characterise and examine the ideological conflicts that Algerian society and artists faced in the early years of independence by contrasting two adaptations (Kasdarli-El-Mouhib and Boukman). Especially with relation to the topic of "women's condition," which the theatrical creations of this era attempt to address in their own unique manner.
